Raw Poppy Seed Cake

Poppy seeds are not everyone’s cup of tea, but for those who like them, this raw poppy seed cake is a treat. But do enough poppy seeds have a narcotic effect because of their opiate content?

What about the opiates in edible poppies?

Poppy seeds are derived from the opium poppy, the same plant from which opium is derived. However, the seeds themselves are virtually opiate-free. Rather, the opiates are found in the milky sap of the seed pods of the opium poppy. However, contamination of the seeds can occur during harvesting through contact with the alkaloid-containing milk juice (1).

Are poppy seeds healthy?

Poppy seeds have a particularly favorable composition of fatty acids. Therefore, it’s recommended to grind the seeds just before use, as the fats oxidize very quickly and become rancid.

With a calcium content of almost 2.5%, poppy seeds are among the foods richest in calcium. They also have a high content of iron, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium.

We activate the poppy seeds to get the full benefit of the valuable components. Before use, the seeds are washed thoroughly with warm water. Then they’re soaked overnight in water to initiate the germination process.

  • 2 bananas
  • 3 apples

  2. Press the dough into a 10 inch cake pan with your hands.
  3. Finely grate apples and let them drain a little if necessary.
  4. Rinse poppy seeds in a fine-mesh sieve and drain very well, add to food processor with bananas and process to a homogeneous mass.
